Whenever you want to go play somewhere away from your house and yard, find a friend to go with you. It may feel exciting to explore new places alone like an adventurer but it’s better to always have someone with you. If you or your friend get hurt, then the other person can go get help!

Anyone that you don’t know very well is a stranger. You may know what they look like and see them a lot, like the mailman or people at the grocery store, but unless your parents tell you that the person is ok to trust, never tell strangers your name, address or phone number. They might be very nice and already know your name but they’re still strangers.

When walking down the street, walk on the side of the street where you can see the cars coming towards you. If anyone pulls their car over close to you and slows down, stay away from the car. Don’t let them get close to you. If you feel uncomfortable, remember to YELL NO, RUN and TELL. Yell “No!” as loud as you can, run to where there are safe adults and tell an adult right away why you are scared. If a stranger tries to touch you or grabs you, it’s ok to fight if you don’t want them to do that. Yell and scream “Fire!” to get other adults to come over and help.

I’m sure you know your name but do you know your parents’ names? You call them Mom and Dad, Ma and Pa, or Mother and Father but lots of other children do too. If anything happens where you’re scared or hurt and can’t find your Mom or Dad, find a policeman or woman. Tell them your parents’ first names and ask them to help you. It’s also very important to learn your address and phone number. Practice writing them down and saying them out loud by heart.

If you can’t find a policeman or woman, go to a phone and dial 0 or 911. The people that you talk to can help you. Remember to stay on the phone with the person until they tell you that it’s ok to hang up. Never hang up the phone after dialing 911 until they say to hang up. They have special computers that can tell where you’re calling from but they need enough time to work. Be patient so that they can find you and help you.

Sometimes it’s fun to write your name on things that belong to you. It’s also easier to find anything if you forget where you put it or someone takes it by mistake. Just be sure to not write your name where other people can see it. If you want to write your name on your sweatshirt because your friend has the same one, write it on the inside where only you can see it. Do the same thing for shoes, your backpack and toys.

If there’s anything that happens to you that makes you feel sad, scared or uncomfortable, the best thing to do is to tell your parents or a grownup that you trust. It’s never tattling to tell them if someone hurt you or made you feel sad. If someone asks you to keep a secret and you feel yucky keeping that secret, then it’s a bad secret. A bad secret should always be shared with a grownup. Good secrets are fun and make you excited. They are ok to keep. It doesn’t make you a tattle-tale when you don’t keep a bad secret.

If you are home alone and someone calls or comes to the door, never say that you’re home alone. If someone is at the door, don’t open it. Keep it shut and locked. Ask the person, “Who is it?” by yelling loudly at the closed door. If they don’t answer or try to get in the door, go to the phone and call 911. When someone calls for your parents on the phone and they aren’t home, just tell the person that they’ll need to call back later. If anyone calls and says things that you don’t like, breathes heavily into the phone or doesn’t say anything at all, hang up and tell a grownup.
